The Amsterdam of the North
Cruising the canals of St. Petersburg, designed to mimic Amsterdam, we felt quite at home. Unfortunately, a pall of smoke covering the town from the unprecedented forest fires raging outside the city, somewhat obscured the glorious architecture of the one-time seat of the Russian Empire, giving the town an uncharacteristic Dickensian feel. Global warming perhaps? |

An Edge-ication
Wonderfully hosted by Stephen, Christina and little Paul Edge, we had a tremendous base for our activities in St. Petersburg. We dined on caviar, learned how to pass toasts amongst Russians and discovered excellent Georgian food. Even better, we located the Jimi Hendrix Jazz Bar. We also found out a surprising amount about 'bottoms' thanks to Paul! |

Red Square at night
Cheryl's delight - fortunately the vast bulk of pictures taken at this time have been deleted. At the site of Lenin's tomb, the Kremlin and Ivan the Terrible's ice-cream cone theological creation - St. Basil's - the weight and grandeur of Soviet history bears down especially at night. Standing in the middle of the square, one can almost feel the May Day parade tanks rolling over one's head. |

One scoop or two?
St. Basil's, Russia's most recognised symbol. More significantly, site of a pivotal cribbage victory for Magnus over Cheryl on September 9th, 2002. |

An interview on the prison phone
Arrested in Moscow for over-use of her camera and the word 'dude', Cheryl pleads in vain for her consort to "Get Me Outta Here!". After a suitable period for reflection (and some peace and quiet), bail was posted. OK, it's a coffee shop. |

'Just like Lord of the Rings'
Horses prancing through the sparkling watery foam, just like the bit in Lord of the Rings where the elfen woman does that spell on the nasty dark rider things from MORRRRRRdorrrr (I can almost hear you thinking). |

Inside the Kremlin
Within the red brick walls of the Kremlin lie a bewildering array of riches. There are several of the most spectacular churches you could hope to see including the Annunciation Cathedral with its gold-leaf domes. Stunning. |

Men in tights
Posing in front of the poster after attending the premier of Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre. The atmosphere was superb: watching one of the world's best ballet company's at work takes some beating. As does the Russian enthusiasm for mid-scene applause, causing the story to pause so that the performers could take ridiculously ostentatious impromptu bows! |
