Highlights of Leaving Home

One final jar of sangria before heading out into the blue yonder

Farewell, then, to our friends:

Murray - who would next be seen working large-scale agricultural machinery (nude) in the Sierra Nevada mountains, California.

Po and Marijke - to join us in Thailand for our first Christmas and Hogmanay away from Carlops and Bakersfield respectively.

Robert - destined to join us for noodles in Beijing, China a few short days from when these notes were penned.

Jason - rumoured to be treating the intervening months as a golden opportunity to work on his golf swing (to have a chance to beat Cheryl on her return).

Elaine - preparing for a long, harsh winter supporting Leicester's promotion bid from the first division.

Bas - Amsterdam's horniest man: who knows where his love of fast cars, exotic ladies and dubious music will take him next?!

Patricia - rumoured to be the head of an evil criminal underworld (hence the cat): will her twisted plans to Rule the World bear fruit before our return?

Leaving on time for our ferry to Amsterdam

- or so it seemed after a breathtaking dash to Scotland to deposit all our goods and chattels from Amsterdam before heading out across the world. Sadly, cruel fate (Editor's note - wasn't it Cheryl screwing up?!) had other plans for us.

We arrived in Newcastle in plenty time for the 6pm ferry, only to find that the only crossing actually left half an hour earlier and we had missed it - how we laughed!

With our final inoculations (rabies and hepatitis B) to be administered in Amsterdam the following day and friends to see for the last time in 7 months it was clearly time to put a crazy plan into action.

... and so, 7 hours later we arrived in Dover, caught the 2am crossing to Calais in France and then drove on through the night through Belgium to get back to Amsterdam BEFORE the Newcastle ferry would have arrived in Ijmuiden - YES!
