We just completed traversing the world from the Arctic north to Antarctica in the south!
Finally turning northwards after an 8 month adventure, our minds struggle to turn to the next major objective (Carnival in Rio) after a mind-bending trip to the stark wastelands of Antarctica. The scale, cold, pristine beauty and fragility of life on that crystal desert digs deep into you. We have been quiet and day-dreamy since we arrived back on dry land in Patagonian Argentina; closing our eyes, blue and white iceburgs glide slowly past and quirky penguins waddle up for an inquisitive peck.
Still, there's a strong relief to being back on dry land after surviving strong gales and gigantic seas on the world's most dangerous seas - the Drake Passage. With no land to stop westerly cyclones from building up steam, the "Roaring Fifties" had our small expedition ship pitching and rolling to an alarming extent, turning the most seaworthy gills a little green. Somehow we managed to avoid throwing up - maybe our biggest achievement of the trip so far!
Now onward to the land of the world's best steaks, Argentina...
