We are currently in Jo'burg, South Africa.
It's a slightly surreal experience, with us corralled in a gated compound.
If we want to go out, the electric gate opens and a vehicle whisks us out with everyone on high alert for car-jackings.
With civil conflicts in Angola, Zimbabwe, Zaire and Mozambique sending poor refuges flooding to wealthy South Africa, the crime rate in Jo'burg has been described as similar to a low intensity war zone - slightly at odds with our "get out and meet the locals" approach!
We'll take a tour to Soweto shortly which should give us an insight into life in the townships - in the meantime it's the exciting world of South African pools, malls and World Cup cricket on the telly...
