The Pantanal was hot, sticky and - as expected - swarming with ravenous mosquitoes. In a shock turn of events, for once Cheryl took the brunt of their ire, taking quite a savaging.

Overall the experience was great with lots of animal sightings, including toucans and the world´s biggest rodent, the capaybara. They gave us nightmares of giant guinea pig retribution - we had, after all, snacked on their little cousins in Peru!

Today we take our second consecutive overnight bus, from Sao Paolo to Rio to meet the Tourneys for Carnaval. In our Sao Paulo layover, we visited the largest expatriate Japanese community in the world and were force-fed alcohol and strange Japanese food all afternoon by excited Japanese-Brazilians - now there´s a bizarre cultural combination! It was all bon-homie, laughter, personal insights and then, at the end, a very stiff and formal Japanese farewell.

Now where did we leave those samba shoes...
