A World Of Paine
Saturday, December 30, 2006

We've just arrived to the southernmost town in the world, Ushuaia, meeting our great friends Kirstin and Gary on their boat Wandering Albatross. For us it is the end of the line of an amazing 8 month overland trip across the Americas - it's a strange but wonderful feeling to gaze out into the bay, knowing we have traveled every mile across the Americas and are about to fall off the end! Now we are working hard with our nautical friends: tasting fine wines, sampling yummy cheeses and preparing for quickly-approaching trips to Antarctica.

We wrapped up our Chilean trip with a grueling week trekking in Torres del Paine. Having bought rain jackets, winter gloves and rubber booties in expectation of the legendary Patagonian rain and wind, we were graced with 6 days of outrageously beautiful, sunny, almost rain-free days. The hiking around the famous granite mountains and glaciers of the Torres was unbelievably gorgeous - a must-do for anyone who really loves the outdoors. Having to carry all our supplies for a week was a real challenge: by the end our knees and feet were crying out for mercy... We managed a uniquely memorable Christmas Day, supping creatively camp-stoved mulled wine after a 15 hour hike up the side of an immense glacier. If we couldn't be with family, this had to be the next best way to celebrate the festive season.
