Scammed at the Peruvian Border! Thursday, November 30, 2006 Today we crossed the border from Peru into Bolivia and are staying on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Our visit to Lake Titicaca has taken a bizarre twist. Puno (now renamed Poo...No!) on the banks of the lake, brought both of us low with evil food poisoning. We are still traveling but mainly from bathroom to bathroom! This debilitation left us in a poor state to deal with customs soldiers at the Peru-Bolivian border. They separated us, took us into a dark cell for three burly guards to hint that they were going to plant drugs on us, seize our dollars for being "possible fakes", before ultimately (in a brilliant sleight of hand worthy of David Copperfield), stealing $160 of our money while "searching" us for drugs and guns. Relief at passing the checkpoint quickly turned to shock as we noticed the money gone. Somewhat unwisely, we muscled our way back into the guardhouse accusing the captain of "losing" our money. To our surprise, he demanded to count the money in front of us - this time slipping our cash back into the fold from his pocket. See - no money missing!!! Clearly the guy should switch to a career in magic. Another close shave with the scammers of South America...!
